Year 1

All students take the following modules in their first year of study. Module names and structure may be subject to change.

  • CONCERT/EVENT PROMOTION & TOUR MANAGEMENT

    This module introduces students to the skills needed to produce and promote tours and/or one-off concerts and events. These include project management, budgeting, liaison with artist management, personnel and roles, tour routing, staging, logistics, managing the environment to ensure the safety of the audience, performers and crew.

  • LIVE SOUND TECHNOLOGY

    All events include some kind of sound reinforcement, and the aim of the module is to give students confidence in live sound situations. It covers the fundamental physics of sound and electrical signals, practical hands-on work with a professional PA system, and the ability to communicate effectively with live audio technicians.

  • ADMINISTRATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

    This module offers an introduction to the key skills and knowledge areas in business administration and independent entrepreneurship. It covers the financial and legislative framework of the industry with reference to a wide variety of organisations and companies: from multinational corporations to solo entrepreneurs. It also considers important topics such as business operations, intellectual property, funding, budgeting, human resources, tax, insurance and business planning.

  • EVENT CONCEPT & DESIGN

    Successful events are built on creative and robust designs. This module aims to instil the knowledge and competencies required to identify and formulate strong and viable event concepts, and to use them as a basis for effective design. It uses case studies and practical exercises to explore the strategic planning behind successful events. This encourages students to identify key stages in the design process and develop sound organisational structures through which events might be realised.

  • INTRODUCING EVENT MANAGEMENT

    This module aims to offer a broad introduction to the world of non-musical events and event management. These might include corporate activities, weddings, outdoor arts events, cultural festivals and others. It will examine the structures and processes behind non-musical events, and identify current trends and market forces on this side of the industry.

  • MUSIC BUSINESS

    This module is designed to introduce a comprehensive picture of the workings of the live music industry. Topics might include such areas as contracts, legislation, venues, festivals trends, merchandising, marketing, social media, and current developments in this fast moving industry. A section on study skills also introduces the academic element of Higher Education.

Year 2

All students take the following modules in their second year of study. Module names and structure may be subject to change.

  • RESEARCH METHODS

    This module helps event entrepreneurs and managers understand research using a variety of different methods. The skills and data generated can be used to plan and prepare for their BA Year 3 Professional Project the following year. The ability to carry out research is an invaluable resource to event managers who wish to develop informed ideas, viable event concepts and realistic business plans.

  • ENGAGING WITH EVENTS (WBL)*

    Work Based Learning (WBL), also known as work experience, is a key component of any student experience at BIMM. On this module you will undertake a minimum of 40 hours Work Based Learning. This will involve some element of event production which can either be in the form of work experience at an established event company or in the guise of running your own event on an individual or group basis. In this way the module develops “real world” key skills, enhances graduate employability, fosters entrepreneurship, and encourages a systematic approach to personal career development.

    * Event Management students are required to produce at least one assessed event of their own in either BA Y2 Engaging With Events or BA Y3 Professional Project. Candidates wishing to select the “Dissertation” research essay option in their BA Y3 Professional Project should therefore run an event of their own in the BA Y2 Engaging with Events portfolio.

  • MARKETING & MEDIA

    This module provides an introduction to marketing and communications in today’s vibrant events industry. It offers students the opportunity to explore traditional marketing theories alongside contemporary music industry marketing approaches, and combine them to create effective strategies for their own professional marketing plan.

  • EVENTS & THE AUDIENCE

    This module examines the audience experience as a whole by tracking the process from initial desire, to attendance and through to post event evaluation. After examining audience motivation and the process of engagement, students will explore the psychology and physical flow of crowd movement, learning to identify hazards and solutions. They’ll then look at the physical experience of an event from the view point of the audience, and cover risk assessments, health and safety and what happens when functions are disrupted by unplanned events.

  • EVENT LOGISTICS & SERVICES

    A strategic and practical approach to event planning and services, this module examines the pre- and post- event processes, specification management and production scheduling required to deliver a successful event. Looking at a range of events, but concentrating on large capacity music festivals, students will gain valuable real-life understanding of event operational requirements.

  • EVENTS IN CONTEXT

    Most events practitioners have an in-depth understanding of the context of their work, and any individual hoping to make a career in the event industry can learn from historically significant events. This module offers a cultural history of the live music, festival and event industries, and examines the economic, social, and technical changes that shaped iconic and memorable collective cultural experiences.

Year 3

All students take the following modules in their third year of study. Module names and structure may be subject to change.

  • PROFESSIONAL PROJECT*

    Three years of hard work come together in a final year project of your choice. This module provides students with a unique opportunity to explore their own ambitions in the event industry, then to implement their best ideas in a practical and supportive setting. Most of all, it provides the opportunity to graduate from BIMM with a road-tested event - or some up-to-date commercial research to enhance your employability prospects. The options are almost limitless here, but might include: launching your own cultural event, targeting that dream job at a festival, booking a tour for a band or DJ, launching an event related web site, crowd-funded projects, starting your own event management company, market research for music festivals, promoting gigs at a local venue, taking a band on the road, pursuing further study and/or working in Higher Education, fundraising events for good causes or charities. It’s entirely up to you!

    * Event Management students are required to produce at least one assessed event of their own in either BA Y2 Engaging With Events or BA Y3 Professional Project. Candidates considering taking the BA Y3 Professional Project “Dissertation” research essay option should therefore choose to run an event of their own in the BA Y2 Engaging with Events portfolio.

  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

    Students are encouraged to consider and facilitate their own personal and business development - an essential activity for event industry entrepreneurs and professionals. This module aims to support students in identifying their professional development needs, covering areas such as career planning, effective team working, stress management, time management and goal setting.

  • FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & FUNDING

    This begins with an introduction to the importance of sound financial management, then moves on to the evaluation of specialist tools and techniques in the event industry. Students will also consider wider issues related to funding, including profit/non-profit events and the role of sponsorship in the event industry. The module is specifically designed to provide important practical and theoretical support for the Professional Project.

  • EVENT PROMOTION & DIGITAL MEDIA

    This module helps event managers use PR, marketing and digital applications to promote and deliver their events. Students will also explore digital rights management and, of course, social networking and social media platforms. Other relevant areas include online registration, ticket sales, merchandising, website creation and opt-in marketing strategies.

  • EVENTS & THE ENVIRONMENT

    This module covers event sustainability management and the increasing need to measure, monitor, evaluate and report sustainability performance. Students use appropriate analytical tools to negotiate international standards in event sustainability (ISO20121) and analyse three key areas of sustainability management (environmental, social, economic) as they relate to the event management lifecycle.

Minimum of 2 A-levels at grade C or above (64 UCAS Points), OR BTEC Level 3 equivalent, and five GCSEs at a minimum grade of C/4, including English Language. Overseas students where English is not their native language must meet a minimum English language requirement of IELTS 6.5. We require a minimum of 6.0 to be achieved in each band.

After this course:

Progression

Graduates can progress directly to employment in the music events industry in areas such as live music, event promotion, and the organisation of sporting and corporate events, music and cultural festivals, and weddings. Alternatively, they can continue their study with a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching at BIMM Brighton or a Masters Degree.
