Track of the Week comes from BIMM Brighton band, Orchards. We caught up with front woman Lucy Evers, to find out all about their new single…
What was the inspiration behind your track?
The track was originally written about the Bee crisis, the ‘bitter feeling’ meaning the smokers and ‘sugar slipping down’ meaning actual honey. I had the first verse and chorus lyrics already written but after linking it to the track and writing a melody it felt like such an angsty song. The rest of the band agreed, and we all decided that it should be a song about unrequited love and how you can change drastically around a particular person. Hence the narrative of the video. (there is a little bee cameo in the video though if you watch closely)
What did your songwriting process involve?
The instrumental parts were originally written without vocals. As a band we write very well together but Sam, Dan and Will thrive musically when by themselves. This works for me as I can write lyrics more organically and in a less rushed manner.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I don’t think there’s a ‘standard’ band format so everybody in a sense is different, to be creative you have to be. The thing that makes us, us though is that we’re all such amazing friends. We’re like a little family and I think you can feel that in the music we write and how we perform on stage.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
‘Glitter Gateway Drug’
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
I’d say mainly HONEY, Foals, Everything Everything and No Doubt.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
The doors it opens for your future, I’ve always said you get out what you put in with BIMM and from my experience I made some fantastic friends and found some amazing bandmates. I have also met lots of people who I’m sure I will work with in the music industry for years to come.
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Keep an open mind. Don’t write what you think people want, write what you know you want.
Write the music you believe in!
What’s next for you?
We’ve got some studio time booked for the new year, writing loads and plenty of touring!
