BA (Hons) Music Production


BA (Hons) Music Production at BIMM London is a specialist programme designed for those wishing to pursue a career in a range of music industry roles, such as producer, sound engineer or creative artist.

The aim of the course is to nurture your creative flair while you develop your skills as a music producer across a wide range of contexts, including traditional studio and live recording, songwriting, live sound and music for moving image. You’ll study the context of contemporary music and the industry that supports it, as well as learning personal, project management and business skills.

Networking and collaboration are central to the degree, and students are encouraged to create music projects with their peers on BA (Hons) Songwriting, BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance, BA (Hons) Creative Musicianship, and BA (Hons) Music Business programmes.

You’ll undertake hands-on learning in our high-tech production facilities and will have direct access to cutting-edge equipment and software, where you’ll be directed in its use by professional industry tutors who really know the ins and outs of the kit.

Year 1

All students take the following modules in their first year of study. Module names and structure may be subject to change.

  • Audio Theory & Acoustics

    This module will provide students with an awareness and understanding of the physical nature of sound and the science of acoustics. It’s crucial for music producers to understand both the mechanics of acoustics and human hearing as well as the psychology of audio perception in order to make the most of their ability to manipulate audio creatively and effectively. In this way they can take control and design sound that will translate to other listening environments, and design and build acoustic spaces in which they are able to faithfully judge the quality of their aural creations.

  • Computer Music Production 1

    This module will provide an in-depth understanding of the opportunities offered by Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and will encourage students to develop technical and creative production values within specific and wider professional practices, echoing the central role of the computer within the context of contemporary music production. They’ll examine a range of hardware and software options with a view to integrating them within the production process and the individual creative sphere.

  • Creative Sound Studies

    This module focuses on the very nature of sound which will help students recognise and understand the complex and multidimensional nature within it. Sound can be used in various ways and applied to both musical and non musical practices to change and enhance the sensory and emotional experience of the viewer/listener. This module will look at how sampling, manipulation and re-editing can create something new and change context or even subvert it.

  • Studio Engineering

    This module will enable students to carry out recording projects in large format recording studios and will include an in-depth look at the architecture of a recording studio and the journey on which sound travels. Students will balance practical and theoretical concerns with creative ideas in order to fully contribute towards the recording process as well as being shown how the ‘science of sound’ and acoustic theory supports the recording process. Emphasis throughout the module will be on setting up quality source sounds and capturing them using appropriate microphones and suitable outboard equipment.

  • Mixing & Arrangement

    This module will give you an awareness of how contemporary mixing practices are employed and how the successful development of musical arrangement can have a profound impact upon this. As music producers of today, we have so many options, tools and varied approaches to mixing that we are enabled to create profoundly dynamic and accurate end results - providing we are employing these correctly. No matter what the style of music that is being created, the instigation of correct arrangement and musical detail can impact on our ability to convey an appropriate and correct mix.

  • Music Business

    This module will show students how you can research the music industry and make informed choices about career options that are available to them within the music industry of today. Academic research will underpin their findings and enable them to carry out and understand how to conduct research using a variety of different methods. The ability to carry out academic research is an invaluable resource to producers who wish to develop informed ideas and viable music projects. These research skills can be used to plan and prepare their work throughout their academic studies.

Year 2

All students take the following modules in their second year of study. 5 mandatory modules and 1 optional module. Module names and structure may be subject to change.

  • Music Production in Context

    This module is an exploration into the history of audio technology and production. Throughout this module students will explore the history of music technology and the ground-breaking technologies, musicians, scientists and engineers that have shaped and created the most original music of the last century. Alongside providing a historical context, this module will look at new forms of technology and current cutting-edge practices. With technology and society ever-changing, this module will explore the cultural relationship between them. It will enable students to understand the historical relevance of technology in the development of modern music and by encouraging wider research they'll develop an informed perspective.

  • Music & Sound for the Moving Image

    This module will focus on music for the moving image through the exploration, analysis and critically evaluation of the work of others in the field and the concepts employed. You will be able to work towards developing your own work to the standards required by the industry through the implementation of specific skills relating to both composition and audio/visual production. In addition the module will look at the world of music synchronisation and specifically writing and producing for broadcast and approaches for this type of production.

  • Sound Studio Production

    This module builds on the Studio Engineering module and enable students to learn to analyse and plan for the needs of a studio production project with clarity and objectivity. Students will work with artists within the context of the studio to develop musical ideas into fully fledged productions which will require them to use the technical methods studied in this module as well as developing an understanding of how to manage creative musical input. In addition, this module will give structure to, and develop studio production skills to a professional level through a detailed study of a wide range of techniques and the practical application of production methods.

  • Computer Music Production 2

    Following on from Computer Music Production 1, this module examines in more detail the opportunities available to music producers within a DAW. Moving forward we will examine the possibilities presented to us within modular software platforms for the development of bespoke instruments and our ability to create new and interesting tools. Synthesis is examined and the approaches to working with other musicians and producers as part of collaborative productions. Finally, the last stages of any music production is examined – mastering and its profound impact on modern day productions.

  • Music Production Industry

    This module will develop students’ understanding of the processes involved in bringing a Music Production asset – an original recording or remix – to a specific market. Critical aspects of the industry including different production models, income and royalty streams, being entrepreneurial, website and online media platform usage and PR / marketing will be explored. By examining and carrying out the procedures involved with the delivery and marketing of a product, students will prepare for engagement with the professional music industry as a Music Producer.

  • Computer Music Performance (Optional)

    This module will enable producers who wish to translate their productions into the live domain by exploring the direction of technical aspects that underpin the creativity they must embrace as a performing artist or as a collaborator. Intricacy, style and the overall desire of the producer is examined along with the various utilisations of key protocols and tools. Students will work with the protocols that extend the capabilities of basic MIDI programming, enabling them to produce and even compose productions through performance. Students will then be encouraged to critically analyse their own performance with clarity and objectivity.

  • Live Sound Production (Optional)

    This module is designed to provide an all round knowledge of how to set up, and maintain a public address (PA) system, and understand the technologies involved. It covers the fundamental physics of sound and electrical signals, building a practical working knowledge of how to put together and operate a professional PA system, giving you confidence in live sound situations.

Year 3

All students take the following modules in their third year of study. 3 mandatory modules and 2 optional modules (1 from Group A and 1 from Group B). Module names and structure may be subject to change.

  • Audio Post Production

    This module will focus on Post Production in Sound for Film, Television and Broadcast. The module will focus on the tools and techniques utilised by professionals in the industry including location sound, ADR and Foley, sound effects, editing and mixing, formats and finishing.

  • Production Project (Double credit module)

    In this module, students will take full responsibility for delivering an independent creative music project which will require the consolidation of skills and experience gained throughout their studies. The project will be originated, developed and delivered independently with students taking full responsibility for production and creative direction. Students will be encouraged to take risks. As a producer, they must be agile, flexible and empathic while maintaining control.

  • Professional Development

    This module gives students the opportunity to develop their self-assessment and peer feedback skills whilst undertaking a significant programme of self-chosen and self-directed professional development. Students may choose to focus on professional development relating to their producer role; business aspirations; personal development; or their efforts to develop the skills to undertake a successful Professional Project.

  • Computer Music Design (Optional Module A)

    This module is about learning technologies that allow us as music producers to diversify on our practices through examining, developing and using software to create new interfaces for music production. At the end of this module, students will be confident enough to create technically exciting projects that for fill their creative intentions outside the realms of conventional music production.

  • Sound & Music for Games (Optional Module A)

    This module will enable students to explore the creation and implementation of music production within the game industry arena. The computer game industry is responsible for an increasing range of employment possibilities for composers and sound designers, and this module will see students carrying out a range of production work that will fully contribute towards the processes they undertake. Students will study aspects such as compositional approaches, musical aesthetics, working with a brief, sound design and sound implementation as well as the technical and creative techniques that are incorporated within sound and music design in the games arena.

  • Immersive Environments (Optional Module B)

    This module gives students the opportunity to explore and develop the personal, creative and technical approaches to using multichannel audio systems through the examination of the theoretical and practical aspects of immersive systems. Through the use of these tools students will be able to expand upon our practices and diversify the nature of recording and production to create new sonic design for multiple purposes. Recording and replay techniques using multichannel mixing technology within live, environmental or studio contexts can provide us with the ability to implement an altogether more immersive sound field.

  • Video & Multimedia Production (Optional Module B)

    In this module students will study audio-visual production and its vocational relevance in today’s internet and media driven society. Students will learn about and use digital video technology, video editing, sound to visual post-production work and story boarding. Students will be introduced to the software and video production processes that will expand the vocational possibilities in the audio-visual production industry, whilst enhancing their critical and creative thought processes.

Minimum of 2 A-levels at grade C or above (64 UCAS Points), OR BTEC Level 3 equivalent, and five GCSEs at a minimum grade of C/4, including English Language. Overseas students where English is not their native language must meet a minimum English language requirement of IELTS 6.0. We require a minimum of 5.5 to be achieved in each band.

After this course:


Graduates can progress directly to employment in the music industry in roles such as producer, DJ, sound engineer, film and television composer and computer music designer, or they can continue their study with a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching at BIMM Brighton or a Masters Degree.
