Vanessa Maria - Awakening

In May we actually get 5 ‘Track of the Week’s, but how are we already on the 3rd?! This week we caught up with BIMM Manchester Songwriter, Vanessa Maria, about her track ‘Awakening’

What was the inspiration behind your track?
It’s about being grateful for the simplest things in life, laughing at your own mistakes and accepting yourself. When I wrote this song I was at a low point, I wasn’t feeling too happy or motivated. I think that everyone at some point in their life will feel this way, some more often than others. This song is about staying positive and a spiritual awakening.

What did your songwriting process involve?
I wrote the lyrics and melody first, then played chords on guitar and it came together quite naturally. I developed the song with my friend Oliver Pinder, adding synth, electronic strings and drums.

Can you describe your sound in three words?
Trippy Dream Pop

Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
London Grammar, The 1975 and Foxes.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Meeting and networking with new musicians and there’s a lot of good performance opportunities here. Good Vibes.

What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Be reliable.

What’s next for you?
I will be recording some singles and releasing them later this year. I’ll also be collaborating with other artists.
