Students Awarded IYMAs Bursary

16 October, 2018

Four instrumentalists were the proud recipients of a bursary from the Irish Youth Music Awards (IYMAs) last week, when they were selected as winners from a pool of first year Degree-level performance students at the BIMM Institute, Dublin.

The award, which saw each student receive a €250 voucher for the purchase of new equipment from Music Maker Dublin, was open to any first-year degree students who had also participated in the IYMAs programme between 2016 and 2018.

First year students Samuel Thistlewaithe (Vocals), Ryan Matthews (Bass), Stephen Dagger (Guitar) and Jordan Crawford (Songwriting) were each awarded their bursaries last week, and as any music student or graduate will be fully aware, €250 worth of vouchers can go a long way when it comes to the purchase of new equipment. We caught up with one of the recipients, Ryan Matthews, to hear how he felt to win and how he plans to invest his prize.

“I didn’t really expect to receive it as I hadn’t even played the main stage at the IYAMS, but applied anyway.”

Said Ryan.

“So, I was more surprised than anything when I got it. A new set of strings for my bass is definitely overdue, and I’ll probably have a look at some distortion pedals to help with some of the new heavier stuff I’ve been playing. It’s a great help with settling into BIMM, because you find yourself playing so much new stuff.”

We wish Ryan and all the other bursary winners at BIMM Dublin the very best with their studies and look forward to hearing the fruits of their new equipment investments.
