This weeks track comes from ambient, soul songstress Megan Lara Mae.

We caught up with Megan to find out all about the story behind the song…

What was the inspiration behind your track?

It was an exploration of my own spiritual journey while trying to capture my musical visions and ambitions.

What did your songwriting process involve?

The lyrics and melody of the ‘Father Father’ hooks came first, so I recorded these on my iPhone and then took them to my keyboard to work out the chord arrangement. After working on some initial production ideas myself, I then contacted a producer (Matt Montgomery-Taylor) who I thought would best portray the pure emotion of the song.

What things do you do differently to other bands?

I am a songwriting pianist, which is less common than those writing with guitar. I always write an acoustic version on piano first, so when I take the songs to my band, they back this and help me maintain the pure piano elements by adding passionate, yet simple band parts.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Melodic, Lamenting, Soulful

Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?

Perhaps some inspiration from Lauren Aquilina, Aurora and Rae Morris

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

Being able to completely dedicate myself to music in such an artistic city. Also having the opportunity to be able to network with other musicians – I found my band through BIMM, and I’m really grateful to be able to playing with such talented and lovely people.

What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?

What’s next for you?

Just keep writing and gigging with a focus on festivals for 2017. My upcoming single ‘From The Ashes’ will be released shortly with a really cool music video to accompany the track.
