Hello Monday, hello Track of the Week! Here’s ‘I Will Never’ from BIMM Brighton Alumna Gisella…
What was the inspiration behind your track?
Every year I visit the north of Ibiza and make sure I go and see as much live music as possible. I find Ibiza a very inspiring place, I’ve been going for ten years now and will always write lyrics whilst I’m there.
What did your songwriting process involve?
I started working with a producer called Youth who invited me over to his home studio to see if we could create a track together. He told me to bring my lyrics book and he pretty much put me on the spot and said ok here is a tune, sing. He is extremely talented and he just knows what works and what won’t work which made the process pretty quick!
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I don’t think I am doing anything dramatically different to other Dance tracks, however I do like to keep the vocals as a main feature and don’t like to have hundreds of effects on the vocals. I also like to keep an old-school Ibiza dance sound to my tracks, as they are the ones still being played in the clubs after thirty years or more!
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
I love soul music and listened to it a lot growing up, so I think a variety of artists over the years have influenced my sound. A mix of soul and dance music is something I have always loved dancing to myself and therefore I love to create it.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
I think one of the best things for me was the confidence it gave me. You don’t have time to be nervous, you just get up on the stage with four other people that create a band around you and you have to go for it. I also made the most amazing friends who are now all doing their own thing musically and it’s amazing to see, you create a little support network and even three years later we are all each other’s biggest fans!
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
For me personally it was to not fear what people think and also that everyone has their own style and you should take inspiration from other artists, not try and be them.
What’s next for you?
Currently I’m in the planning stages for a music video for this track. I have also just started writing a track with a DJ in Ibiza which I am soooo excited about and that should be released by March!
