Former BIMM students, Vicky Warwick (bass) and Deborah Knox-Hewson (drums), have been making a name for themselves in the music industry as two highly-professional session musicians. The pair have toured with a whole host of acclaimed artists, including international pop superstar, Charli XCX!
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Vicky and Deborah back to BIMM Brighton to talk about their work at an extra special Masterclass. The talented musicians spoke enthusiastically about their glittering careers and their incredible success since leaving BIMM Brighton.
It was fascinating to hear more about the current session musician scene and what it’s really like to tour with big name artists. Our guests even shared some invaluable tips about auditioning for music roles. Both our staff and students were green with envy at the number of amazing countries both musicians have visited while touring and we were all very impressed to hear about their past appearances on The X Factor and The Late Show with David Letterman – what a gig!
There’s no doubting Vicky and Deborah are natural-born talents, but hard work has also played a big part in their success. Both spoke about the importance of practice and having a good understanding of electronic equipment and emphasised how people skills and downtime are also essential.
The Masterclass included a live performance, which blew our audience of eager students away – it’s clear to see why they were picked for Charli XCX’s world tour. Commenting on the session, BIMM Brighton’s Head of Drums Pat Garvey, said:
“It’s always great to have past students come in and share their success; it’s such a valuable part of the student experience at BIMM. Debs – as with so many of the successful students that have come out of the Drum Department at BIMM Brighton – was dedicated, not interested in nonsense, always in lessons, always taking part and ALWAYS looking everywhere for the right opportunity. Like so many successful musicians, she made her own luck through hard work and a sense of where she wanted to be. It was a real pleasure having her and Vicky visit. Two great people and two fantastic musicians.”
We pride ourselves at BIMM in having an excellent alumni network, and we love hearing about our past students’ successes. It’s always inspiring for our current undergraduates to hear from past students, many of whom have gone on to become successful musicians and industry professionals after studying the same courses.
It was great catching up with Vicky and Deborah, and we’d like to wish them all the best for the future!
