Event Management student lands impressive festival role

Student Success

BA (Hons) Event Management Degree student Via Culpan has landed firmly on her feet since completing her course this year. The BIMM Manchester student fulfilled the role of Production Office Manager at Parklife Festival last month and has since secured management roles at numerous festivals throughout the Summer.

The young events professional recently headed up the production office at the annual Parklife festival in Heaton Park, Manchester, which saw performances from the likes of N.E.R.D, Liam Gallagher, Skepta, Chvches, Sigrid, Vince Staples, Justice and Jamie XX.

“It was incredible!” Said Via on the Parklife experience.

“I see the Production Office as the hub of an event – we’re involved with everything on site like answering queries from contractors, artists and staff to allocating plant keys, accommodation and food vouchers, etc. The team I worked with were all amazing and the feedback I received was fantastic – it’s definitely given me a confidence boost!”

The opportunity for Via to get involved in this role came about through BIMM Manchester’s Careers Team encouraging her to volunteer at the ever-popular Warehouse Project (WHP). She explains how events have unfolded since then.

After successfully completing my interview at WHP, I was asked to work four shifts (stage managing and assisting in the office). I think I’d volunteered at two of those shifts when I was asked to accompany ‘GoTo Live’ (an Event Production company involved with WHP) to Edinburgh to work the ‘Elrow Haunted House’ Halloween event which they were connected to. GoTo Live – who I’m now on a retainer contract with – have since given me so many opportunities including working The TPI Awards and The Festival Awards earlier this year.”

As many BIMM students and alumni will know, being a professional in the live events industry often requires a versatile skill-set utilised within a freelance lifestyle, as Via has discovered throughout her studies.

“Being on a retainer contract is perfect for me right now because it allows me to work with an incredible group of people but I’m also able to pick up other jobs in my spare time – not that I have much anymore! It’s been so rewarding putting into practise everything I’ve learnt over the past three years at BIMM!”

Via is looking forward to working her very first overseas event next month at Jika Jika festival, in Derry, Ireland. After that, she’ll be heading back to the UK to manage the Production Office for Cotton Clouds

We’re incredibly pleased to see Via doing so well since completing her course. Having achieved such a strong start within the events industry, we’re certain she has a bright future ahead of her.
