Daniel P Carter is perhaps best known as the time-served host of BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show and a founding member of alternative nineties rock band, A.
A true British rock legend, the singer-songwriter has played with a multitude of successful groups over the years, including Hexes and Bloodhound Gang.
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Daniel back to BIMM, this time in Bristol, for a Masterclass. Sitting down with Songwriting tutor, Annie Gardiner, the radio host discussed all aspects of his decade-spanning career, including his years at Radio 1.
Daniel, who is currently a member of heavy metal supergroup Krokodil, found time to share a number of impressive rock’n’roll anecdotes, from narrowly making it out of Russia with Bloodhound Gang to being helicoptered out of Top of the Pops to make a sell-out Exeter show with A.
The multi-instrumentalist explained how he first discovered his passion while studying Graphics at University and went on to praise BIMM, saying he would not have made nearly as many mistakes over the years had an institution like BIMM been around when he was starting out.
On the subject of new music, Daniel highly recommended ‘You Are We’ by Sheffield’s Why She Sleeps which he described as ‘awesome’.
The Masterclass ended with a Q&A, giving our students a chance to ask Daniel more questions about his life in music, including his advice for new musicians starting out: “Don’t be a dick!”
Following the Masterclass, we caught up with Annie and twin brothers Dan and Thom Thould, who study Pro Mus Guitar and Drums at BIMM Bristol respectively.
“Daniel was full of hilarious stories that really cannot be repeated; a ‘had to be there’ moment was had by all,” revealed Annie.
“Best masterclass, bloody hilarious,” Dan
Echoing his comments, Thom said: “Very entertaining but constructive at the same time.”
Inspirational and engaging, Daniel’s BIMM Bristol Masterclass was a huge success; we’re already looking forward to welcoming him back.
