Chrissie Huntley - Senseless

Track of the Week

It’s Monday, and we know what that means! It’s time for Track of the Week.

This week it’s BIMM Bristol songstress Chrissie Huntley with her latest release ‘Senseless’ enjoy..

(Make sure you read through to the end for an awesome acoustic version of the track too!)

What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
I wrote the track a few years ago while in a long-distance relationship- I had a vivid dream in which I could still see, touch, hear the person in my subconscious, and so ‘Senseless’ was born out of a love that defied all of the senses.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
Musically, I am inspired by many different artists, such as Lake Street Dive, Melt, Lianne La Havas; but in terms of my lyrical content I just get inspiration from real life stuff that’s happened to me- I find it easiest to write when it comes from a truthful place- it’s a bit like writing a diary for me!

What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
I would say that my music is predominantly upbeat and happy- and I like to make it stand out by bridging the gap between pop music and organic instrumentation (which might explain why my backing band is evergrowing- I am up to 7 members now with my brass section and have plans to add more!)

How does your songwriting process work?
I don’t have much of a process other than if I’m feeling a certain something, I usually write down what I’m feeling in a note on my phone, then come back to it later. Quite often my songs start out as poetry, and then I’ll hear a melody and adjust the poem to fit the melody.

Describe your sound in 3 words…
Powerful, sunny, positive.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
BIMM has been amazing for me to develop as an artist- I used to get uncontrollable nerves before going on stage, to the point where it affected the way I sang because I couldn’t control my voice as it was so shaky! Now, through performing so often, I have learned to control my nerves, grown in confidence, and have recognised who I am as an artist and what I want to represent.

You’ve just got back from Glastonbury, how was that?
Glastonbury was UNREAL! I feel so incredibly honoured and lucky that I got the opportunity to perform 5 times at the festival, and each one was so very special in so many ways. BBC Points West followed my journey and I’m so thankful that I have the experience documented in such a lovely way- I just keep reliving it over and over!

What’s next for you?
I have a headline show at Mr. Wolfs, Bristol on 23rd August if anyone would like to come! I also have a couple more festival performances this Summer, as well as 2 new singles planned for release before the start of 3rd year. But for now, I am taking some time to relax, enjoy the British sunshine and spend some quality time with my cats, Steve and Dave!
