Spotify playlist success for BIMM London students

18 April, 2018

Two BIMM London students recently had their tracks featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK playlist.

Being selected to feature on officially curated Spotify playlists has become of a right of passage for many up and coming artists today, making this news a welcome and positive step in their blossoming careers.

First up to be featured in last weeks NMF playlist was Swiss-Indian R’n’B songstress Ta’Shan, who is currently studying a BA (Hons) in Music Business and playfully describes her sound as “Curry mixed with a bit of Fried Chicken”. Her latest single ‘Comfie’ rubbed shoulders with the likes of Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and ZAYN on the playlist, and this boost to her profile comes fresh on the heels of recent live support slots with the likes of Sean Paul, Lil Jon, Nelly and Ryan Leslie.

The second release to feature on last week’s NMF playlist was the work of young songwriter Yo Preston, who is also currently studying a BA (Hons) Music Business degree. Preston wrote contributions to the track ‘Drive’ for Liverpudlian Island Records signee Youngr, who has been gaining increased industry traction since his debut single release a couple of years back.

Like most modern songwriters, Yo has diversified his skills to contribute ideas for other artists’ material alongside preparations for his own original songs, which are set for public release very soon.

He explains a little about his approach to this recent collaboration;

“I try to find the balance of how the record should feel if they were writing it on their own and what I can add to the mix stylistically. Youngr is a great person to write for. He’s one of those artists that you can say “It does what it says on the tin”. His songs are mellow but catchy and very hooky. His production tells a story in itself. I felt like I knew exactly what he would have wanted when I got the instrumental.”

These recent successes from BIMM London prove that you don’t necessarily have to be studying a Songwriting degree to have success as an original music creator. These students are perfect examples of how creative people can study a degree in Music Business in order to better understand the industry and turn their knowledge to their advantage as performers.
