So far 2016 has seen former BIMM Brighton Guitar student James Bay nominated for 3 Grammys and 4 Brit Awards.
He’s been nominated for Best New Artist, Best Rock Song for ‘Hold Back The River’ and Best Rock Album for ‘Chaos and the Calm’ at The Grammys, and he’s been nominated for British Male Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, MasterCard British Album of the Year with ‘Chaos And The Calm’ and British Single with ‘Hold Back The River’ at the Brits.
2015 saw him winning the 2015 BRIT’s Critics’ Choice award.
Chosen by a panel of music industry experts, James was picked as the most exciting new artist to watch in 2015, beating the hotly-tipped George the Poet and Years and Years. He is now enjoying chart success and sell-out tours as one of the UK’s most talked about artists. James’ second single “Hold back the river” reached number 2 in the UK singles chart and his debut album Chaos and the Calm reached number 1 in the album charts.
James’ raw expressions, articulated via his distinctly gravelly voice, have won him a loyal following – not only at BIMM Brighton – but much further afield too. James’ sound leans on legends for influence – Jackson Browne, Carole King – but finds its own place in the modern musical landscape.
James has had plenty of high-profile success in recent years prior to hitting the charts, including a sell-out UK tour, supporting Irish sensation Hozier in America, performing live for Fearne Cotton on BBC Radio 1, sharing the bill with the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park, supporting Kodaline and providing the live soundtrack to a major Burberry fashion show.
In 2015 he also won an O2 Silver Clef Award for Best Newcomer and performed to a massive crowd on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival.
James studied a BA (Hons) Degree Professional Musicianship at BIMM Brighton.
