It’s time for Track of the Week! Meet BIMM Manchester’s, Jack Conman and his latest release ‘Greatly Hastly’.
What was the inspiration behind your track?
I wrote the song in summer before moving to Uni. The song is about starting to see a girl and knowing that I was moving to another city in 2 months.
What did your songwriting process involve?
I laid down a simple drumbeat and a bassline on Ableton and started writing lyrics over the top. The chorus melody was made just by humming it one day without any music or lyrics. I decided to add the melody to this song.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I lay my guitar on my lap and play it like a percussion instrument for some songs.
Have you channelled any artist in particular on this track?
I used elements of Matt Corby’s music through the bassline and the delayed guitar. And I’d say the repetitive drumbeat came from listening to a lot of Mac Demarco.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Having 3 years to be a musician full time and meeting loads of other musicians.
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
‘You should write a Christmas #1′…………
On a serious note, Jon Gomm told me to “do as much of the work you can yourself, as other people can let you down”. This is a bit cynical but I think as long as they’re your good mates, they shouldn’t let you down.
What’s next for You?
I’m releasing a load of singles and an EP to follow at the end of April. As well as sorting out a UK tour with a band for summer.
