ABBA, Robyn, Avicci, Lykke Li…Sweden has a history of producing great pop superstars. Hoping to join their idols in the country’s musical hall of fame are two Swedish BIMM London graduates who have this year signed a huge publishing deal with BMG Scandinavia under the name Topia.
The two BIMM luminaries we’re talking about are the ultra-talented Patricia Lundblad (vocals) and Karl Arheden (guitar,) who both met while studying with us in London before graduating in 2014 with a Diploma in Vocals and BMus in Guitar respectively.
Patricia and Karl have been hard at work writing with BMG, playing shows all over the world, and introducing new fans to their eclectic blend of 80s-inspired synth pop. Earlier this year, the band dropped their huge debut single, ‘Statement Song’ to much critical acclaim.
So, what else can fans expect? The band are currently back in Sweden to finish their debut EP, which is due for an Autumn release. Speaking to BIMM about their musical style, Topia’s Karl said:
“We like to take inspiration from different genres and throw in a bunch of different stuff in our songs.”
So, what advice do they have for current and prospective BIMM students, and all those interested in pursuing a career in the music industry?
“Our advice would probably be to stay true to yourself and do what you love. It sounds cliché, but it’s hard to know what people will like, so at least do stuff that you enjoy yourself,” adds Karl.
“It’s really important to put yourself out there and show people what you are doing. Get people to review your songs and to spread the word. Even if it’s just one song, that could make the whole difference.”
We couldn’t agree more! We’d like to congratulate Patricia and Karl on signing with BMG Scandinavia, as well as the release of ‘Statement Song’ – we’ve been hooked ever since.
