This week, our track comes from BIMM Manchester indie outfit – The Navettes! With their belter of a tune ‘Please’.
What was the inspiration behind your track?
The lyrical inspiration for this track, is a relationship scenario where both parties are aware of their dysfunctional relationship but find it hard to let go, even though they know it is for the best.
What did your songwriting process involve?
Tom created a demo for this track over summer, which was predominantly guitar, drums and structure ideas. Tom and Abbey then wrote lyrics as the second stage of the process, then it was brought into the rehearsal space in October where the song evolved further. Originally the song was going to be a B-side to a future single. However, once we all heard the final mix we couldn’t let it be a B-side; we fell in love with it instantly.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
We throw together a blend of duet lead vocals and powerful harmony driven songs. We also take inspiration from 80’s indie through to the modern day.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
“Just above average”
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
We each bring our main musical influences and personal styles.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
The networking and the people provide endless opportunities.
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Don’t eat the yellow snow… only kidding. Network, network, network – you don’t know who’s round the corner.
What’s next for you?
Next for us is our next music video, which is being filmed later this month. Then, we’re setting off on a tour across the UK in Feb/March to get our name and our music out there. On our return we will drop our first music video and single of 2017! A very exciting year to come.
