These guys have had a very busy Summer. Playing Festivals all around the country and talking their spacey, ambient tunes along with them.
Penelope Isles have given us this harmony brimmed delight to ease us into the week.
What was the inspiration behind your track?
Triangle Face Man was about a guy I saw step onto the train and his whole face was covered in tattoos of triangles… I think, I might of actually dreamed it but it seemed pretty real at the time!
What did your songwriting process involve?
I wrote most the lyrics on the train as soon I saw the triangle faced man, then as soon as I got home I finished it on my ukulele. The best part was working out the harmonies in band practice with Jack and Becky. When we recorded it the song evolved into something more heavy than the folk piece it was originally. Now when we play it live it is totally different, and will most likely forever be changing as our sound develops.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I’m not sure, how do other bands do things? I guess with our first record ‘Comfortably Swell’ we released it before playing any shows. That’s kind of backwards I guess? Jack and I do everything ourselves, writing, recording, producing, booking, artwork, merchandise, online stuff… etc! But we are looking for a booking agent! I like to think we pay a lot of attention to our live shows..I think that’s where our band is at its most exciting. Also our mascot is a Love Bird called Buz….He’s on our T-shirts..You can hear him in some of our new recordings.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
DAMN DANIEL.. DAMN
DREAMY ATMOSPHERIC & DYNAMIC
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
Radiohead vibes and also a touch of the track ‘Rosyln’ by Bon Iver and St. Vincent for the harmonies.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
We got to play some festivals this summer through BIMM! And have met some cool dudes over the past 2 years.
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Some old dude once said to me before his set at an open mic…
‘We roll tonight..to the guitar bite..and for those about to rock..I salute you.’
Whats next for Penelope Isles?
We’re currently recording our next collection of songs, ‘umming and arring about what to pan where! A release date will be announced soon, probably for early 2017. We’re heading off on tour soon to play some shows up north and down south. We’ve also got our first headlining show for a while in Brighton on the 24th October at The Green Door Store. Come along..Its gunna be a bigg’n!
