One Of The World’s Greatest Drummers Visits BIMM

27 November, 2014

Harvey Mason has sat behind the kit for an incredible array of stars (Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, James Brown and Beck to name just a few) during a long and glittering career.

Everyone at BIMM Brighton was incredibly excited when Harvey visited on the 21st November, and the atmosphere was electric in BIMM House Live Room 1, as students waited to hear from a master of his art.

Recognised as one of the foremost jazz drummers on earth, Harvey has been nominated for a remarkable ten Grammy Awards, has performed at the Oscars on countless occasions and has even appeared on the soundtrack of a number of blockbuster movies. This meant, of course, that he had numerous fascinating and insightful stories, and students were thrilled to learn from a man who has done it all.

Dave Smith, a second year student on the BA (Hons) Drums course, said:

“It was a privilege watching and hearing such a legendary player within the music industry,” and Oscar Stone, a fellow Drums student, agreed: “It was absolutely amazing to watch Harvey play, and to listen to him talk about his career!”

The students sought playing tips, career advice and feedback on their own ideas about drumming, and Harvey was happy to oblige with thoughtful answers.

It was a genuinely memorable day, and perhaps student George Pickering summed up the feelings of everyone at BIMM Brighton, when he said:

“This was a masterclass I will never forget. To be in the presence of one of my musical heroes, to learn his skills and to have an insight into his experience was incredible!”

We couldn’t agree more! Thanks so much for hosting an amazing Masterclass, Harvey.
