Before headlining a sold-out show at Bristol’s 02 Academy, American singer-songwriter Nathaniel Rateliff dropped by our Bristol campus with his band, The Night Sweats, to deliver another highly successful BIMM Masterclass.
Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats are reaping the rewards of their hard work. The Denver-based musicians, whose music fuses folk with vintage rhythm and blues, have gone from playing London’s tiny Lexington pub, to selling out the 5000 capacity 02 Academy Brixton in under a year.
The session, which was hosted by Mark Bowers – BIMM Bristol’s head of events and guests – proved to be both insightful, and entertaining. Nathaniel was very open about his success and as Mark says
Accompanied by two of his bandmates, Mark Shusterman (keyboards) and Patrick Meese (drums), the singer waxed lyrical about his group’s current success and life on the road.
The bearded rocker also revealed his great sense of humour. During the session, he revealed how he had once donned a blond wig and bra while giving Britney Spears a strip dance. He was returning the favour after the international pop superstar covered one of his songs.
Nathaniel, who took up drums at age four before later discovering the guitar, discussed the importance of hard work and being persistent.
He has been writing songs for as long as he can remember. But despite this, things have only just taken off in the last few years. The Masterclass ended with a stellar performance from the band.
Speaking after the session, student Matthew Wilson – BA1 said:
Also in the audience was Sophie Kay, a BA1 Songwriting student at BIMM Bristol, she said:
Funny, knowledgeable and approachable, Nathaniel Rateliff was a huge hit with our BIMM Bristol students.
