Miles Goodall - Fantasy

TRACK OF THE WEEK

It’s time for our final Track of the Week of 2017, fresh from touring in Budapest, it’s BIMM Brighton’s brilliant songwriter, Miles Goodall.

What was the inspiration behind your track?
Well this one’s from personal experience, it’s basically a love story gone wrong. I fell for someone close to me but they didn’t feel the same way unfortunately, and the song is pretty much about how I dealt with that and how I misread signals and had formed this sort of ideal in my head for what could be.

What did your songwriting process involve?
It varies song to song, with this track it was really easy to write, I just sat at the piano and the first thing I played was the verse chorus progression and it sort of spawned from there. The first line “floorboards squeak” was literally about the floor in my bedroom at the time, it was a very old house and the floors everywhere would creak and make noise, which I did like (apart from the complaints from downstairs neighbours).

What things do you do differently to other bands?
I try to make sure every lyric I write means something to me, there are no throw away lines. I like songs that tie into each other as well, as with Fantasy and the next track I’m going to release (Better For Me) they sort of tie into each other story-wise, and I like that.

Can you describe your sound in three words?
Honest, Jazzy, Vintage (absolutely terrible at that bit!)

Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
I think with the harmonies Steely Dan/Beach Boys, I was listening to a lot of Andy Shauf and Adele as well.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
The opportunities you get to play live at festivals and other events. Plus, getting to meet so many like-minded people.

What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Write the music that you want to hear, don’t let anybody else define your sound.

What’s next for you?
I’m currently booking a UK tour for the spring. The band and I will be back in the studio in February to record a few more tracks. There is another single coming out in the new year as well with a launch show, all dates still tbc with that, but I can’t wait to get the track out there! It sort of follows on chronologically from Fantasy as well, so it’ll be nice to add to the story of the song.
