This week our Track of the Week is from BIMM Bristol’s Michael Vickers…
What was the inspiration behind your track?
The song is about getting a tattoo, using the journey through the process and the way I felt in the parlour as a metaphor for a relationship.
What did your songwriting process involve?
I wanted to write a three chord song as I had never tried that before. I started messing around with some shapes, and the lyrics just kind of came to me. Originally the song was to be part of an EP I was putting together based around a crazy fortnight I had when I was 19.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I like to think my songs are very personal. I think my lyrics are unique in the way I tell stories within the songs. There are a lot of rhymes in my lyrics and often a lot of words generally.
I think the way I use my chords stands out, with this song being a 3 chord song it’s hard to use this as an example. My song ‘Maybe It’s Nothing’ is perhaps a better example of my usual sound.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Honest, story telling, passionate. (Kind of 3 words)
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
Not particularly, although I think I wear my influences on my sleeve. I think I just wanted to write a fast paced positive sounding track.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
I have loved everything about it. The lecturers, the people, the opportunities and the skills I’ve learnt from it. They got me a set at Glastonbury!
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
‘Keep on going, don’t worry too much about what you’re doing just enjoy your music and be happy’. BIMM Bristol bass tutor Greg Gordez said that to me in a pub in Bristol. The guy’s a legend and that stuck with me.
What’s next for you?
I’m gonna take over the world, man!
Haha, we’ll see what happens, finger’s crossed as things are looking promising. But as I said, I’m really enjoying my music at the minute, so it’s all great!
