Legendary guitarist and producer, Gerry Leonard has joined BIMM Dublin’s ever-expanding team of music industry professionals and tutors.
Dublin-born Gerry, who is best known for his seminal work with David Bowie and Suzanne Vega, is set to take on the role of visiting faculty tutor – a major coup for BIMM Dublin and huge news for our students.
His appointment follows a string of fantastic masterclasses and sessions across our network of colleges; we’re genuinely thrilled to welcome such a renowned musician.
Gerry famously worked as musical director and touring guitarist for the Thin White Duke on his Reality world tour (2003/2004), before co-writing two songs for Bowie’s penultimate masterpiece, ‘The Next Day’.
Now living in upstate New York, Gerry continues to record under the moniker Spooky Ghost while also producing for a host of new artists, drawing on his unique ambient style.
Speaking to BIMM ahead of his appointment, Gerry shared his enthusiasm for meeting new students and helping them to advance in their creativity:
“I feel like I have been there over the years and have found ways past the obstacles that come up. I think being taught by working musicians brings a whole level of street and real life to the lessons and advice given.”
When asked about the best bit of advice he has ever received, Gerry spoke of the importance of being different and being disciplined with your playing:
“Ultimate discipline leads to ultimate freedom. Meaning the amount you invest in your instrument and philosophy will generate dividends way beyond your investment.”
Wise and invaluable words from an iconic musician who still continues to push the boundaries as both a musician and producer.
