Here to cheer you all up on Blue Monday is this weeks belter of a Track of the Week – ‘Squeeze Me’ from the mighty, Keir of BIMM Bristol.
What was the inspiration behind your track?
I wanted to write something which would make me feel better – I wasn’t feeling very good at the time for a number of reasons and needed to get it all out, I guess thats what helped birth squeeze me. Listening back it’s frantic, I feel elated after hearing it.
What did your songwriting process involve?
I write with a good friend of mine in London- Fred Cox. We tend to get in the studio and forget the world outside, strip off and play chords that aren’t chords, beats that aren’t in time, and then make sense of it later on. I love writing in this way, it makes for interesting pop music.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I’m not sure we do anything differently.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Dramatic, electric, soulful.
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
I love David Bowie and I love Prince so I think there is always some of them in there.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
I loved learning about the lack of rules there are in songwriting, it really opened up the world for me once I realised you could combine something conventional with something quite odd.
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Do what you love.
What’s next for you?
Next we are rehearsing and playing shows in the run up to a release later this year! Also lots of festivals in the summer!
