JP Cooper Drops by BIMM London

1 December, 2016

Singer-songwriter JP Cooper is perhaps best known for the platinum hit single ‘Perfect Strangers’, which he collaborated on with hotly-tipped producer Jonas Blue.

The track made a big impression on the charts, peaking at number two in the UK. Outside of the smash summer hit, JP has been wowing audiences for some time now. He first shot to fame with his debut Island Records EP ‘Keep The Quiet Out’ which captured the eye of several prominent artists and DJs, including Huw Stephens and soul-sensation Angie Stone.

We recently welcomed to JP to BIMM London for another highly-anticipated Masterclass, following his sold-out UK tour.

JP covered a broad range of topics, including his time growing up in Manchester, songwriting and his musical influences, which range from Nirvana and Pearl Jam right through to Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway.

On songwriting, the singer explained that he consistently writes music but later stressed the importance of taking rest and distracting the mind. Interestingly, one of his best songs was written over a game of table tennis.

JP gave our students an in-depth analysis of his unique vocal style, the culmination of many years spent singing with various bands and his time in a gospel choir.

Offering his advice to our students, JP mused on the importance of staying in your own lane, not being swayed by another artist’s sound and urged the crowd always to work hard and to be nice to people.

The Masterclass drew to a close, but not before an incredible performance from JP and several BIMM London students who provided backing vocals, guitar and keys.

Third-year student and vocalist Fab Schiavone was among the performers on stage. Together they brought the house down!

“It was an honour and privilege to have the chance to sing with JP Cooper. Not only has the opportunity allowed me to gain skills and experience in my career path,” she told BIMM.

“It has also shown me that, with hard work and determination, anything is possible at any age which JP demonstrates amazingly.”

For second-year BIMM student Ruby Murphy, performing on stage with one of her musical heroes was a dream come true.

“I’ve been a huge fan of his for a long time so to share the stage with him was an absolute dream,” she revealed.

Echoing her sentiments was BIMM student and guitarist Mackenzie Jamieson, whose talent really shone through on stage.

“It was great to be given the opportunity to play with JP Cooper,” he said. “It’s always an exciting and eye-opening experience playing with an artist like him.”
