Catching up with Martha Phillips

STUDENT SUCCESS

It has been an amazing few months for BIMM Manchester Songwriting student Martha Phillips – we caught up with her during her tour of the UK and Europe…

Hi Martha, you seem to have lots going on at the moment, can you give us a little overview?
Yes, it’s been incredible! Getting through to the Fender Undiscovered Artist of the Year finals and finding out I’m joining Boyce Avenue on the UK and European leg of their world tour within the same week has shaken me up to be honest!

Congratulations on making it to the final of Fender Unsigned Artist of the Year! How did that feel?
Thank you, it’s such an honour, I can’t believe the support I’ve had these past few weeks. It feels amazing to have got this far.

Was there any advice you received in the process that particularly stood out?
One of the judges, Kev from Communion Records, said he could see I had lots of ideas that I was trying to articulate but that it was important not to get too lost in them!  At first I was trying to fit too much into my songs and I ended up losing the foundations under the mud so to speak.  His advice has really challenged me to think about the best aspects of my songs and not to overdo it.

You’re now supporting Boyce Avenue on the Europe, UK, and Ireland leg of their world tour – how did the tour come about?
The band had seen my Fender semi-final video and BIMM sessions video through my manager, and the initial phone call came asking if I could hop on the tour the next day! Unfortunately, I had to miss those first two dates because of the Fender competition but I joined them in Munich straight after.

Any cities you’re particularly excited about playing in?
I was probably most excited for Amsterdam it’s a city I have always wanted to go to.  The atmosphere was incredible and the city was absolutely beautiful.  Now I’m most excited for Manchester as that’s my closest hometown show. A few of my friends are coming so I’m hoping I’ll be at my most relaxed!

So with so much happening at the moment – anything else lined up?
Well, this tour has been solo so I’m excited to be playing with the band again (The Elephant Trees). We’ve got our first London show coming up on 10th November to celebrate our new single “Open Up”, and a UK tour in early December. Full steam ahead!

We wish Martha the best of luck with everything and we are excited to see where her music career goes next.
