Fresh from appearing at Brighton Pride 2017 – BIMM London‘s Andrea Di Giovanni is our Track of the Week with ‘Close to the Dark’.
What was the inspiration behind your track?
Close to the Dark talks about a previous relationship I was in; things were coming to an end but I wasn’t able to fully let go of my partner, as I was too scared to face the consequences. I would then manipulate the whole relationship in order to always be in the strongest position, then I ended up nearly losing myself.
What did your songwriting process involve?
I start with just a piano and then I build up the whole arrangement. In this case I was jamming to Sia’s Cheap Thrills and I came up with the major hook ‘Oh oh oh’ and then decided to write the song around it.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I am a one-man-band, I am completely DIY in my creative process, I am in charge of every single aspect of my music and I feel like there’s not a lot of other artists/bands in the mainstream pop scenario that do that without the help of labels or managements here in the UK.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Electronic, Pop, Dramatic.
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
I definitely wanted to channel some JLo vibes mixed up with introspective lyrics, like MØ does on her tracks.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Making connections with industry professionals that will last for the rest of your life!
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Be yourself at all times and be resilient. A door closed today leads to a brighter path in the future! You’ll never know.
What’s next for you?
I have a new single coming up in October plus talking to interesting labels. The only way is up!
