BIMM Music Institute Bristol facilities

BIMM Music Institute Bristol opened its doors in 2008 and has two buildings in the heart of this West Country city. One is located at Moon Street with the other just a minute away on King Square.

Choose to study across our two colleges and you’ll be surrounded by high-tech facilities. These include two high specification recording studios with live rooms, kitted out with industry-standard Audient desks and a wide range of bookable recording equipment.

Since opening in 2008, BIMM Music Institute Bristol has grown in size and scope to deliver a range of music-focused creative industries diplomas, degrees and MA programmes to almost one thousand students.

St James’ House replaced our Passage Street campus building in 2022 and will support our continued growth by ensuring our students have access to industry-standard resources throughout their studies.

The building

St James’ House is a four-storey, 33,000 square feet former office building in Stokes Croft. Its proximity to BIMM King Square allows us to develop a more substantial presence and community in the area.

Studio People, the design and construction team, worked directly with Hannah Phipps, College Principal, to develop a vision for the college that puts the students, staff and local community at the centre of the design. The college makes use of clean, contemporary and industrial design elements whilst also featuring plenty of natural materials. Studio People specialise in creating studio spaces, so not only does the space look amazing, it sounds amazing too.

The upgrade in facilities and equipment supports learning across our single and joint honours courses, including performance, media and marketing, music business, event management, songwriting, music production, and music teaching.

A café-bar

You’ll have access to local professional studios throughout your studies. With these opportunities, you can apply the skills you’ve developed in a professional, real-world setting.

If you’re a Performance student, you’ll also get to perform regularly at local professional venues, such as Rough Trade, the Fleece and the Thekla. You might see your favourite artists grace the same stage you play each week in class.

And that’s not all. We also have an excellent selection of bookable resources and specialised equipment that can help you push the boundaries of your musical creation, such as a modular synthesis rig and two vintage tape machines used for experimental composition. Cameras, lights, mics and even green screens are available to book if you’re interested in media and content creation.

George-Ezra-Bristol

George Ezra studied Songwriting at BIMM Bristol before finding fame with his smash-hit single ‘Budapest’.

BIMM Music Institute Bristol gigs are regularly held aboard the iconic Thekla: an award-winning converted German cargo ship moored in Bristol Harbour. As a first-year student, you’ll be given a tour of the city by boat during induction week.

Nothing quite beats applying what you’ve learnt in a real-world setting. That’s why we’ve partnered with creative hub Pirate Studios. Here, you’ll have access to 24/7 rehearsal and production spaces that allow for endless practise…and it’s all free of charge.

Initially, Pirate Studios was set up to change the way musicians rehearse. And it’s you that will be bringing the latest music into their chambers. When using the space, you’ll have the chance to use professional equipment, record your sessions and see what life in a real studio is really like.
