We had our first ever Fresher’s gig to kick off the new term at Coalition. The line up included some of the best BIMM Brighton bands around: Mean Poppa Lean, Astro Physics, Ice Black Birds, Electrixcity and The Peppermint Beat Band. It was a great evening and the venue was fully packed with new and returning musicians to the college. It also gave the performing bands a chance to play to a new audience and drum up some extra fans along the way. Highlights of the night were BBC Radio 1 Huw Stephens favourites Ice Black Birds and Mean Poppa Lean.

Night of Vocals with Amy Winehouse’s band
BIMM Brighton welcomed guests and musicians alike into the Komedia for a fantastic ‘Night of Vocals’. Compered by BIMM Director Kevin Nixon and tutor Jason Knight, the evening was host to Amy Winehouse’s live band. BIMM vocalists had the opportunity to play an amazing set of soul classics and Amy Winehouse tracks. The band, featuring Dale Davis (bass), Hawi Gondwe (guitar), Sam Beste (keyboards), Troy Miller (drums) and backing vocalists Ade Omotayo and Zalon Thompson spoke about their careers and gave the audience an insight into what it is like to work for one of the most famous vocalists in the world! This was a truly memorable and stunning evening and many thanks to the band for taking the time out to visit us.

BIMM Bristol’s Night of Drums
The sound of thundering drums on board the good ship Thekla in Bristol signaled the arrival of BIMM Bristol’s Night of Drums. Pro sticksmen James Hester (Malakia), Craig Blundell (Bruce Dickinson, King Crimson) and Jason Bowld (Pitchshifter/This Is Menace) gave 130 Bristol drummers and special guests from Rhythm Magazine and Drummer Magazine the chance to get up close and personal showing what hard work, practice and focus can achieve. James Hester demonstrated how to develop simple patterns into usable groove ideas. Craig Blundell wowed the audience with his ability to bend time signatures and Jason Bowld took the audience through double bass and solid beat development ideas. The trio concluded the night by playing a medley together which was simply incredible! And that’s not all, BIMM Bristol College Manager Mark Clayden (Pitchshifter/This Is Menace) gave away hundreds of pounds worth of Mapex gear to some very lucky winners.
