Laurence Cottle - Bass Masterclass

BIMM Brighton received a special guest visit from top session bassist Laurence Cottle who came down to speak with our musicians.

Laurence has worked with Eric Clapton, Black Sabbath, Brian Eno, Sting, Cher and Tom Jones, dazzled everyone with his incredible dexterity and tight groove playing. Laurence was joined by top session drummer Ian Thomas, and together they formed a powerhouse rhythm section. Playing along to backing tracks they demonstrated many different styles from extremely complicated unison Jazz heads, to a tight soulful funk groove that they perform with esteemed vocalist Carleen Anderson.

They fielded many questions from the floor, such as how the role of a session musician has changed over the last few decades. Laurence explained many details of how he approaches the bass technically and even treated our musicians to many funny personal anecdotes from his experience in the business.
