Now at BIMM Brighton you can join a unique teacher training programme which will equip you to work within both Further and Higher Education. Both these sectors now require tutors to be professionally qualified to teach and BIMMs programme has been designed to help you understand and implement good teaching practice. Through lesson planning and managing group teaching - whilst maintaining a high level of musical creativity and ensuring attainment for those that you teach.

Postgraduate Certificate in Further and Higher Music Education*This course is offered at BIMM Brighton; it is validated by Middlesex University; it is subject to accreditation by SVUK.
Location BIMM Brighton Course Overview* This one-year course has been created for music professionals who would like to gain a teaching qualification as part of their professional portfolio. It is designed to provide the professional qualifications you need to begin to teach in Further and/or Higher Education. The focus is on helping you achieve a confident, enjoyable start to teaching. The course is practical and hands-on, and also covers teaching and learning theory. You will be required to gain teaching experience while on the course, and you will be mentored by an experienced teacher as you do this. The course is the equivalent of one-third of a Masters Degree. | Unit | Description | | Preparation to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) | A very practical, initial introduction to professional teaching, including: your role as a teacher; planning a lesson; basic classroom techniques; assessing students; professional ethics; and the legal framework for teachers. (This course has recently become compulsory for all new teachers in Further Education, and is a stand-alone qualification. It is the entry-level qualification required to be allowed to teach in F.E. colleges. We have built it into the PGCert, and you will complete it during the first term.) | Professional Practice in Teaching, Learning and Assessment (post-compulsory education) (20 credits at Level 3 – equivalent to the final year of an Honours Degree) | This follows on from the PTLLS course, and provides a thorough grounding in teaching in F.E. & H.E. The course is designed to help you feel confident that you can walk into a classroom and do a good, professional job. The course is practical and hands-on, and includes: designing sessions; setting learning outcomes; teaching techniques; student behaviour; working with groups; giving feedback; assessing students; using I.T.; and evaluating your own teaching. | Linking Theory and Practice in Post-Compulsory Education (20 credits at Level 4 – Masters level) | This course deepens your knowledge of teaching theory, and helps you develop into a more creative, thoughtful and well-informed teacher. Education theory is introduced to help improve and develop your teaching practice. Topics covered include: how people learn and develop; different styles of teaching; people development, mentoring & coaching; professional values; working with a range of students; helping your students become more independent and more successful. The course also looks in more depth at specific issues relating to teaching music. | Taking an Action Research approach to Researching Professional Practice (30 credits at Level 4 – Masters level) | This final course gives you the opportunity to choose one aspect of your own teaching, and to investigate it more deeply in both theory and practice.
