the assessment process
Places at BIMM are offered on a first come first served basis, so the earlier you book an appointment, the more likely you will get a place on the course that suits you and your playing, singing or songwriting. Please be aware that we begin assessing a year in advance for our courses.

When you come for an assessment you will be asked to watch an hour's presentation from our Head of Recruitment. You will be shown a DVD which will outline the aspects of life at BIMM, be taken through course content, Gigs and Events, the BIMM Album and be given the opportunity to have your questions answered about any concerns you may have.

The assessment itself will run for either half an hour or an hour depending on what course you are interested in. This takes place on a one to one basis with one of our Industry professionals. You will be asked questions regarding your career goals and aspirations - you should ask questions too. This is very important, so try to think about it before you come, we endeavor to find the right course for you, so the more we know about what you expect from your career, the more we can help.

Before you come, you should think about what you are going to play or sing in the assessment. You should prepare this piece thoroughly; as the more prepared and rehearsed you are - the better you will do. If you have any CD's of recordings you have made, or backing tracks you would like to play along to, please bring these with you.

Your assessor will then be able to determine your level of technical ability, improvisational skills, timing, knowledge of scales, chords and rudiments, live and studio experience and general attitude to learning and be able to take you through the best course for you and explain why.

We keep this process as relaxed as possible - so don't be nervous! We have a range of courses to suit all abilities!

Your assessor will let you know whether your audition has been successful immediately.

If successful, we will talk about your long term career goals, and what we can do to help you achieve them.

Should you be unsuccessful, your assessor will discuss with you why you did not get through, and will make suggestions on how to improve the areas you were weak at...Do not be disheartened...Use the information as encouragement to get better and improve, your assessor will also suggest a time for you to come back to BIMM to be reassessed.

If you work hard during this time, you are more likely to be accepted after your second assessment. We are committed to BIMM students and work hard at ensuring each musician at BIMM enjoys the course, learns how to improve their playing, and at the end of the course is prepared to enter into the very exciting music business. This is why the assessment process is so important.

So, be prepared when you come for your assessment, enjoy the process and hopefully we will see you at BIMM at the beginning of the year!!!!!
